Work Under Way
Work has now started in the Newton Stewart Town woods. Thinning of Duncree woodland has been carried out with beech and sycamore being felled. Invasive non-native species (himalayan honeysuckle) have been weedkilled.
At Doonhill Wood, sycamore are being thinned through half of the woodland. Log and brash piles are also being created. These make good habitats, and especially as the logs start to rot. Brambles have been controlled. Dyke repairs have been made. Safety inspections have been carried out and dead trees near to the paths will be removed. Other dead trees away from the paths will be retained where not dangerous for wildlife, these being valuable habitat for woodpeckers, fungi, invertebrates and a whole host of other wildlife.
